Minister Julapun Deepens International Labor Cooperation
Labor Minister Julapun Amornvivat has recently concluded productive discussions with counterparts in Italy and Singapore, aiming to enhance employment opportunities and strengthen labor cooperation for Thai citizens abroad.
Italy’s “Flows Decree” Opens Doors for Thai Workers
During a meeting with Italian Minister of Labour and Social Policies Marina Elvira Calderone, Minister Julapun expressed gratitude for Italy’s decision to include Thailand in its proposed “Flows Decree.” This framework is anticipated to significantly expand legal employment avenues for Thai nationals, particularly in sectors like agriculture that require both seasonal and regular labor.
Minister Julapun highlighted this development as a crucial opportunity for Thai workers seeking overseas employment. He further urged Italy to actively support the swift finalization of a labor memorandum of understanding between the two nations.
The bilateral discussions also encompassed technical and vocational education. Thailand conveyed keen interest in Italy’s successful model, which integrates technical institutes, universities, and local businesses. The dual-track education system employed in Italy was also a focal point of discussion, along with workplace safety and occupational health standards.
Additionally, Minister Julapun sought Italy’s support for Thailand’s aspiration to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Singapore Talks Focus on Foreign Worker Management and Retirement Funds
In a separate engagement, Minister Julapun met with Singapore’s Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng to forge stronger labor cooperation. Minister Julapun extended his thanks to Singapore for its ongoing support and protection of over 5,000 Thai workers currently employed in the city-state.
Key areas of discussion included Singapore’s Central Provident Fund (CPF) system and its foreign worker levy scheme. Minister Julapun indicated Thailand’s interest in leveraging Singapore’s extensive experience in managing retirement savings and investment funds. This knowledge exchange is seen as vital for modernizing Thailand’s own social security system.
