Thailand Positions Itself as ASEAN’s Entry Point for Russian Investment
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul recently concluded a visit to Russia, actively promoting Thailand as a strategic gateway to the broader Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) market. During his trip, he extended an invitation to Russian investors, encouraging them to establish a regional base within the Kingdom.
The Prime Minister participated in the Special ASEAN-Russia Summit held in Kazan, where he also addressed the ASEAN-Russia Business Forum. In his remarks, Anutin highlighted Thailand’s appeal as a prime entry point into an ASEAN market comprising over 700 million consumers. He emphasized the nation’s robust infrastructure and advanced logistics capabilities as key advantages.
Key Investment Opportunities Highlighted
Anutin pointed to significant opportunities in rapidly developing sectors, including data centers, semiconductors, the digital economy, clean energy, food production, healthcare, and the green economy. He urged Russian businesses to leverage Thailand as a launchpad for their expansion across the region.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister proposed strengthening cooperation with Russia across several critical areas: connectivity, trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges. He reiterated Thailand’s commitment to supporting the ongoing free trade negotiations between ASEAN and the Eurasian Economic Union, initiatives designed to enhance market access and foster economic growth for all participating parties.
‘3Rs’ Concept for Regional Stability
During the summit, Anutin introduced his “3Rs” concept – Regionalism, Resilience, and Relevance. He called for collaborative efforts to bolster regional peace and stability, secure vital resources like food, energy, and supply chains, combat cybercrime and human trafficking, and cultivate future workforce skills.
The Prime Minister also engaged in discussions focused on economic connectivity between ASEAN and the Eurasian region. He met with Thai business executives currently operating in Russia, gathering insights and fostering dialogue.
Bilateral Meetings and Cooperation
In a separate engagement, Anutin held an audience with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah of Brunei Darussalam. Their discussions centered on enhancing cooperation in critical sectors such as food security, agriculture, energy, public health, wellness tourism, and investment opportunities.
