Urgent Call for Film Production Funds
The Tourism and Sports Ministry is pressing the Cabinet to release 770 million baht in cash rebates for two major international television series. These payments are crucial for fulfilling commitments made to foreign film producers, with a significant portion owed to productions that filmed in Thailand last year.
Key Productions Await Funding
The Tourism Department has formally requested a central budget allocation for fiscal year 2026 to cover cash rebates for five foreign film projects. Director-General Jaturon Phakdeewanit confirmed that the necessary documentation has been submitted to the Budget Bureau. The two most prominent productions, ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 and ‘Alien: Earth,’ collectively invested over 4.1 billion baht in Thailand. ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 utilized 1.3 billion baht, while ‘Alien: Earth’ spent a substantial 2.8 billion baht.
Rebate Calculations and Outstanding Balances
Both productions are eligible for a 20% cash rebate on their investment. This translates to an estimated 240 million baht for ‘The White Lotus’ and 528 million baht for ‘Alien: Earth.’ These rebates represent outstanding balances from fiscal year 2025, as approvals were granted mid-last year. Officials emphasize that attracting world-class studios like those behind these series is vital for encouraging future productions to choose Thailand as a filming location.
Diplomatic Interest and Ministry Efforts
The significance of these payments is underscored by inquiries from the US Embassy regarding the progress of the rebate distribution, channeled through the prime minister’s office. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is actively coordinating with relevant government agencies to expedite the disbursement process. A priority has been placed on these two specific projects, as their rebates were part of the previous administration’s budget planning.
Contingency Plans and Ministry Merger
Should the funds not be released through the central budget this year, the rebates will be incorporated into the fiscal year 2027 central budget, with payments commencing in October. Director-General Jaturon Phakdeewanit stated that the aim is to complete these payments before the planned merger of the Culture Ministry and the Tourism and Sports Ministry, slated for early next year. Additionally, cash rebates totaling 171 million baht for three other film shoots, approved for payment in April, have also been noted by the Tourism Department.
Thailand’s Evolving Film Rebate Scheme
Thailand currently offers an attractive film and TV production cash rebate program, providing up to 30% of investment with no maximum limit. The rebate structure is tiered: investments between 50-100 million baht receive a 15% rebate; 100-150 million baht investment qualifies for a 20% rebate; and investments exceeding 150 million baht are eligible for a 25% rebate. To qualify, filmmakers must adhere to specific conditions, including employing Thai nationals in key roles, promoting Thai soft power, and filming in less-developed cities. The ministry is open to reviewing these measures if the positive impact on tourism warrants it.
