Global Intellectual Property Organization Recognizes Royal Patronage of Creativity
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has appointed a Thai princess as its new Intellectual Property (IP) Ambassador for Fashion and Design. This significant appointment underscores the organization’s acknowledgment of the princess’s substantial contributions to creativity, innovation, and the strategic application of intellectual property rights.
A Ceremony of Recognition
A formal ceremony was held at WIPO headquarters in Geneva to mark the princess’s official appointment. This event highlighted her remarkable career in fashion, during which she has amassed 541 IP assets. Her branded collections, spanning jewelry, leather goods, and home decor, have seen trademarks registered in 34 countries.
Strategic IP Use Drives Enterprise Growth
WIPO Director General Daren Tang praised the princess’s iconic creative identifiers, such as the Peacock motif and the “SR” monogram. He noted how these elements effectively blend cultural expression with commercial strength, serving as a prime example of how strategic IP utilization can foster business expansion.
“Her Royal Highness has demonstrated a consistent and deliberate practice of leveraging intellectual property as a bedrock for establishing a lasting creative enterprise,” Mr. Tang stated. “Furthermore, Her Royal Highness’s work extends far beyond her personal portfolio. Throughout Thailand, she has collaborated directly with artisans and craftspeople, empowering communities to transform their traditional heritage into products competitive in contemporary markets. Her expertise in integrating heritage, design, and intellectual property offers a model for others to emulate.”
Expanding Global Reach for Creative Traditions
The Director General expressed his hope that this ambassadorship would enable the princess to extend her impactful work beyond Thailand’s borders. The aim is to assist communities in other nations in unlocking new potential within their own creative traditions through innovative designs, effective branding, and the astute application of intellectual property.
Mr. Tang also extended his gratitude to Thailand for hosting a WIPO exhibition that showcased the princess’s distinct IP holdings. The exhibition featured examples of products from her fashion lines alongside traditional creation methods employed by Thai artisans.
Economic Empowerment Through Royal Initiatives
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Suphajee Suthumpun, present at the ceremony, highlighted the tangible economic benefits of the princess’s endeavors. “By generously sharing original fabric patterns with local weavers and artisans across the Kingdom, Your Royal Highness has sustainably created livelihoods for over 800,000 families in all 77 provinces,” Ms. Suphajee reported. “This has generated economic value exceeding 200 billion baht, or more than 5.3 billion euros.”
“These royal initiatives serve as a powerful demonstration to creators and designers worldwide that intellectual property, when deeply rooted in cultural heritage, can generate enduring social and economic value for generations,” she added.
A Legacy of IP Engagement
This appointment reflects a long-standing connection between the Thai royal family and the field of intellectual property. In 2009, the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King Rama IX, was honored with the WIPO Global Leader Award for his significant contributions as an inventor and his dedication to innovation.
More recently, HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya received the WIPO Award for Creative Excellence in August 2025, further cementing the royal family’s commitment to fostering creativity and intellectual property protection.
