Public Sector Modernization Focuses on Staff Optimization
Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilprapunt announced on Wednesday that directives have been issued for the Office of the Civil Service Commission to develop an early retirement program. The initiative aims to address what he described as an overabundance of civil servants whose positions are no longer relevant to contemporary government functions.
Digital Transformation and Bureaucratic Efficiency
This reform is a key component of broader efforts to modernize the public sector, aligning with international standards championed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). It also supports Thailand’s strategic pivot towards a digital government framework.
Retirement Age Stays at 60 Amidst Efficiency Drive
Mr. Pakorn dismissed proposals to extend the mandatory retirement age beyond 60, asserting that such a change would merely perpetuate current challenges. He cited international examples, such as Denmark and France, where attempts to raise retirement ages have ignited public demonstrations from workers eager to retire while in good health.
AI’s Role in Streamlining Operations
The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the growing influence of digital technology and agentic artificial intelligence. He posited that these advancements are increasingly diminishing the necessity for extensive bureaucratic structures within government operations.
