A significant renovation is underway at Asiatique, a popular riverside destination, with a major new attraction based on the blockbuster “Avatar” film franchise set to be the centerpiece. The project, spearheaded by Asset World Corporation (AWC), aims to transform the expansive 224,000-square-meter site into a “global hub of experience,” according to company president and chief executive Wallapa Traisorat. This ambitious upgrade includes the development of “Avatar: Guardians of Eywa,” an immersive entertainment experience that will mark the first official use of the “Avatar” intellectual property for a licensed attraction in Southeast Asia.
A World-Class “Avatar” Experience
The “Avatar: Guardians of Eywa” attraction is being developed in partnership with EMM Williams Productions. It promises to deliver captivating immersive experiences complemented by live acrobatic performances. The choice of “Avatar” is strategic, given the immense global popularity of director James Cameron’s film trilogy. The “Avatar” films collectively stand as the highest-grossing film series worldwide, having generated over US$6 billion at the box office and captivated audiences of all ages. Mrs. Wallapa highlighted that this broad appeal makes it an ideal theme for a new family-oriented attraction at Asiatique.
This new venture aligns with AWC’s broader business strategy, which often involves leveraging established global brands with existing customer loyalty programs, similar to its hospitality division’s approach with international hotel brands. The “Avatar” attraction itself is slated to occupy approximately 4,000 square meters. It will be a key component of the larger “Blue Dome” project, a 16,000-square-meter development that draws inspiration from the Blue Ocean Dome at the Osaka World Expo. The architectural design for the Blue Dome is credited to the renowned Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Shigeru Ban.
Timeline and Projected Growth
The Blue Dome is anticipated to open its doors later this year. However, visitors will need to wait a little longer for the “Avatar” experience, which is scheduled for a grand opening in early 2027. Following these major additions, AWC projects a substantial increase in visitor numbers at Asiatique. The company expects daily foot traffic to climb to over 50,000 people, a significant rise from the current average of 30,000 to 40,000 visitors per day.
The positive impact of new attractions on Asiatique’s performance is already evident. In the first quarter of the year, the venue reported an 81% occupancy rate. Visitor traffic saw a notable 16% increase year-on-year, largely attributed to the successful launch of the “Jurassic” project. Last year, AWC introduced “Jurassic World: The Experience Bangkok,” a collaboration with Universal Destinations & Experience. Alongside this, Asiatique also debuted the SkyFlyer swing ride and the “Better World Better Future” exhibition.
Future Developments and Enhancements
The renovation and expansion plans for Asiatique extend beyond the “Avatar” attraction and the Blue Dome. AWC is committed to enhancing the overall visitor experience with several other key developments. These include the construction of new parking facilities designed to accommodate the anticipated surge in visitors. Furthermore, plans are in motion to expand the diverse range of food and beverage offerings available at the venue. Additional attractions are also part of the pipeline, promising even more entertainment options for guests.
A particularly exciting addition will be a new cable car system designed to traverse the Chao Phraya River. This cable car will create a direct connection between Asiatique and the Charoen Nakhon side of the river, offering novel perspectives and improving accessibility. Complementing these entertainment and infrastructure upgrades, Asiatique will also welcome the Mona Bangkok art museum, further diversifying its cultural and artistic appeal. These comprehensive enhancements collectively aim to solidify Asiatique’s position as a premier destination for entertainment, culture, and leisure in the region.
Strategic Vision for Asiatique
The overarching vision for Asiatique’s renovation is to cultivate a dynamic environment that offers unparalleled experiences. By integrating world-renowned entertainment properties like “Avatar” with architectural marvels and enhanced amenities, AWC is positioning Asiatique not just as a tourist spot, but as a comprehensive lifestyle and entertainment hub. The strategic inclusion of family-friendly attractions, diverse dining, and convenient transport links underscores a commitment to catering to a wide demographic of visitors, both local and international. The success of previous ventures, like the “Jurassic” project, provides a strong foundation and clear precedent for the anticipated success of the “Avatar” attraction and the broader revitalization efforts.
