National Pride at Stake: Call for Expo Funding Release
Business leaders in Nakhon Ratchasima are urging the government to release crucial funds for the upcoming 2029 International Horticultural Exposition, emphasizing the event’s significance as a matter of national pride, not just a provincial endeavor. Concerns have been jointly raised by private sector organizations with local parliamentary representatives regarding delays in allocating the necessary budget to advance the master plan for the exposition, scheduled to run from November 10, 2029, to February 28, 2030.
“Preparations have progressed through cooperation between the public and private sectors, but budget constraints remain a key obstacle,” stated Sawat Mangkornwat, president of the Nakhon Ratchasima Hotel Association, on Sunday. He highlighted that the event is poised to significantly enhance Thailand’s global standing and deliver substantial economic advantages across the nation.
Hospitality Sector Ready for Influx
The province’s hospitality industry is reportedly well-prepared to welcome international visitors. Hotels ranging from three-star to five-star establishments are ready to offer tens of thousands of rooms to accommodate the expected influx of tourists.
Joint Push for Master Plan Advancement
Five prominent private sector organizations, including the provincial chamber of commerce, industrial federation, tourism council, banking association, and hotel group, convened with Members of Parliament from both governing and opposition parties on Sunday. The meeting aimed to review the project’s progress and advocate for accelerated implementation of the master plan.
Participants reaffirmed that the exposition, which received approval from the International Association of Horticultural Producers in 2019, will be hosted on a 1,000-rai site located in Thephalai subdistrict of Khong district. The event is intended to serve as a showcase for agricultural innovation and is projected to stimulate long-term economic growth for the region.
Reassurance on Hosting Rights and Timelines
Paijit Manasilp, chairman of the Nakhon Ratchasima Chamber of Commerce, expressed strong support for the project from private sector groups and dismissed any speculation that the province might forfeit its hosting rights. He confirmed that current efforts are primarily focused on securing budget approval for the comprehensive master plan, ensuring the project remains on its projected timeline.
Infrastructure Improvements Planned
Proposals are in place to enhance transportation accessibility. These include the introduction of a dedicated “Korat Express” rail service connecting from Bangkok, the facilitation of charter flights to Nakhon Ratchasima Airport, and the operation of shuttle buses to link key transit points with the expo site in Khong district.
The government had previously approved a budget allocation of 4.2 billion baht in 2024 for the World Horticultural Expo in Nakhon Ratchasima.
