Multi-Day Search Underway for Missing Trekker
Rescue efforts have entered their fourth day as an extensive search continues for a 53-year-old Thai woman who vanished while trekking in a mountainous region bordering Trang and Phatthalung provinces. Over 100 individuals, including local woodsmen, residents, wildlife sanctuary officials, park rangers, and administrative officers, are actively engaged in the operation.
Details of Disappearance
The missing woman, identified as Wantanee, also known as Ae, from Nonthaburi province, was last seen on June 1. She was part of a group of 10 friends who traveled from Bangkok to Phatthalung for a three-day, two-night trekking excursion along the Khao Jed Yod route within the Khao Banthat Wildlife Sanctuary. The group commenced their trek on May 30, camping near Praiwan Waterfall on their first night.
Separation from Group
On the morning of May 31, the group established a new campsite higher on the mountain, sharing the location with approximately 20 other travelers and four local guides. As the trekkers began their descent on June 1, Wantanee reportedly packed her belongings and informed her friends she intended to walk ahead. Despite her friends’ requests for her to wait and continue with the group, she opted to proceed alone.
Search Efforts and Potential Clues
When the rest of the trekking party reached Nan Sato Waterfall, a planned resting point, Wantanee was not present. Local guides initiated an immediate search, attempting to follow her footprints. However, reports indicate that heavy rainfall significantly hampered tracking efforts. The search operation, which began on June 1, has seen an increase in personnel joining the effort daily.
Recent findings by search teams have uncovered potential evidence believed to be linked to the missing trekker. Officials discovered wet tissues and human waste in the forest, which are suspected to belong to Wantanee. The condition of the waste suggests it is relatively fresh, leading to the belief that she may still be within the search area. Authorities, volunteers, and local residents are continuing their comprehensive search of the forest and surrounding mountain terrain in the hope of locating Wantanee safely.
