Food Delivery Rider Detained in Bangkok Tourist Robbery
A food delivery rider has been apprehended in Bangkok following allegations of snatching a tourist’s bag. The incident, which occurred in the Thong Lor district, has led to the identification of two other individuals believed to be involved.
Details of the Incident
Authorities at Thong Lor Police Station took 26-year-old Anusorn into custody on June 3 after a Qatari tourist lodged a complaint the previous day. The tourist reported that two men on a motorcycle accosted him in Soi Sukhumvit 38, forcibly taking his bag before speeding away towards Sukhumvit Road.
The stolen property included approximately 20,000 Thai baht, US$500 in cash, along with credit and other personal cards.
Investigation and Suspect Roles
Investigators from Thong Lor Police Station and Metropolitan Police Division 5 have reportedly identified three individuals allegedly connected to the robbery. Sources indicate that 30-year-old Worachon is accused of selecting potential targets, 32-year-old Jakraphat is believed to have driven the motorcycle, and Anusorn is alleged to be the one who snatched the tourist’s bag.
During the investigation, it was discovered that black stickers had been affixed to the motorcycle’s license plate in an apparent attempt to obscure its identification.
Confession and Motive
Anusorn, who identified himself as a food delivery rider, reportedly admitted to receiving 6,000 baht from the incident. He also stated that he discarded the stolen bag after the robbery.
Reports suggest Anusorn confessed that he needed the money for personal expenses and to fund online gambling activities.
Charges and Ongoing Pursuit
Anusorn faces charges including jointly committing theft at night, causing physical or mental harm, using a vehicle in the commission of an offense, carrying away stolen property, and evading arrest. His motorcycle has been confiscated as evidence, and he has been transferred to Thong Lor Police Station for legal proceedings.
Law enforcement officials are actively gathering further evidence to secure arrest warrants for the two other accused individuals and are currently working to locate them.
Similar Incidents
This case echoes a similar incident last year where a 47-year-old man was arrested for snatching a Myanmar national’s bag, also reportedly to fund online gambling. In that instance, the stolen bag contained 28,000 Thai baht (approximately US$840), a mobile phone, a passport, a work permit, and other important documents.
