Heavy rains struck Pattaya late on May 14, causing widespread flooding that submerged multiple roads and left tourists stranded in vulnerable low-lying zones.
Affected Areas and Rapid Water Rise
Intense thunderstorms lasting over an hour led to rapid water accumulation in areas such as Soi Khao Noi, Soi Khao Talo, South Pattaya’s Sukhumvit Road, Third Road, and the railway road behind Wat Tham Samakkhi. Water levels surged quickly, blocking smaller vehicles and creating hazardous conditions.
Traffic Chaos and Stranded Motorists
Motorists who ventured into the floodwaters often faced stalled engines, stranding their vehicles and halting traffic late into the night. Many drivers chose to wait for waters to recede or rerouted to avoid impassable sections, exacerbating congestion across the city.
Recurring Flood Challenges
Local residents highlight that flooding remains a persistent issue in Pattaya, persisting for decades despite ongoing efforts to enhance drainage, dredge canals, and upgrade infrastructure. Officials frequently describe the situation as “water awaiting drainage,” but locals report frequent vehicle breakdowns, travel disruptions, and property damage.
These annual floods tarnish Pattaya’s reputation as a premier Thai tourist destination, with submerged roads and gridlock frustrating visitors.
Similar Incident Last Year
Last year, heavy downpours exceeding two hours flooded roads in Bang Lamung district, stranding tourists and locals while washing away over 20 motorcycles. Water depths reached 20 to 70 centimeters, rendering several routes completely impassable and paralyzing traffic.
