Phuket International Airport Enhances Immigration Efficiency with New Technology
Phuket International Airport is set to introduce automated outbound passport gates on June 13, aiming to significantly reduce immigration queues. This initiative comes in response to mounting public concerns, amplified on social media, regarding congestion and allegations of preferential paid services at the airport’s immigration checkpoints.
A government spokesperson confirmed on June 3 that directives have been issued to relevant authorities to tackle the persistent congestion issues plaguing the airport’s immigration area. The implementation of automated gates is a direct measure to address these concerns and improve passenger flow.
Addressing Congestion and Service Concerns
Recent social media activity highlighted significant delays at immigration, with some users reporting instances of passengers allegedly being charged for expedited passage, termed a “fast-track service.” In response, airport officials have emphasized that immigration services operate strictly under government protocols and standards, with no official policy permitting extra charges for special privileges.
The new automated system is designed to expedite passport verification processes, thereby minimizing wait times and elevating the overall standard of immigration services to meet international benchmarks. This upgrade is particularly timely as Phuket airport continues to experience a steady increase in both passenger and tourist traffic.
System Testing and Implementation
Prior to the official launch, airport executives, including Phuket Airport Director Monchai Tanode, conducted a test run of the Automatic Border Channel system in the international departures passport control zone on June 2. Airport personnel have been designated to collaborate with immigration officers to assist travelers in navigating the new automated gates.
To utilize the automated gates, travelers must possess an eligible e-passport. This technology is expected to streamline the process for eligible passengers, offering a faster and more efficient immigration experience.
Clarification on Alleged Special Lanes
Immigration police have previously refuted claims that Phuket International Airport offered a paid “special lane.” They attributed the immigration delays to a temporary system slowdown during periods of unusually high flight activity. According to authorities, the disruptions were short-term and related to the immigration information system, not a deliberate offering of a fast-track service for a fee.
The introduction of automated passport gates marks a significant step towards modernizing Phuket’s international gateway and improving the travel experience for its growing number of visitors.
