Thai businesses are showing significant progress in their digital transformation journey, with the average digital maturity level rising to 2.12 out of a possible 4. This notable increase, up from 1.56 in the previous year, is largely attributed to enhanced adoption of advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), alongside improvements in data-driven practices and cybersecurity capabilities. The findings stem from a recent survey of 834 digital entrepreneurs nationwide, indicating a strengthening momentum towards a digital economy in Thailand.
Key Improvements and Persistent Challenges
The study, conducted by the National Board of Digital Economy and Society Office, assessed digital maturity across seven critical dimensions. Cybersecurity emerged as a standout area, showing the most substantial improvement with a 1.25-point increase to reach 2.34. Digital technology adoption also saw a healthy rise to 2.08, and digital workforce capability improved to 2.04. These gains reflect a growing commitment to integrating digital tools and enhancing the skills needed to leverage them effectively.
However, the survey also highlighted areas requiring further attention. Digital product and service development, along with research and development (R&D), experienced a slight decline, falling to 1.62 from 1.70. This suggests that while businesses are becoming more adept at using digital technologies, the pace of innovation in creating new digital offerings and investing in future-oriented R&D needs acceleration.
Varying Maturity Levels Across Company Sizes
Digital maturity levels varied across different company sizes, though all categories demonstrated medium-level proficiency. Large enterprises, while still leading in digital maturity with a score of 2.58, saw a slight decrease from 2.74 in the prior year. This could indicate a stabilization or a shift in focus within larger organizations.
Medium-sized firms showed considerable improvement, climbing to 2.41 from 1.97. Perhaps most encouragingly, small businesses crossed a significant threshold, reaching 2.01 from 1.45. This marks the first time small enterprises have achieved an average score above 2 points, signifying a crucial step in their digital journey. For these smaller entities, cybersecurity was the area of greatest advancement, followed by digital business management and data-driven operations.
AI Leads Advanced Technology Adoption
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become the most widely adopted advanced technology among Thai businesses. It accounted for 21.2% of all advanced technology implementations, closely followed by blockchain (20.1%), big data analytics (19.9%), the Internet of Things (IoT) (19%), and robotics (17.8%).
AI Adoption: Progress and Early Stages
The survey revealed that 61% of businesses have already incorporated AI into their operations in some capacity. Despite this widespread adoption, the majority are still in the early phases of deployment. A significant portion, 47.4%, are currently experimenting with AI, while 29.7% are engaged in pilot projects. Only a smaller percentage, 15.7%, have managed to expand AI deployment across multiple business functions, and a mere 7.27% have fully integrated AI into their organization-wide operations.
Common AI Applications
Marketing emerged as the most prevalent application for AI, with 39.2% of respondents utilizing the technology for marketing activities. Other key areas where AI is being applied include business operations and internal processes (33.5%) and information technology (33.1%). These applications demonstrate AI’s growing role in enhancing efficiency, customer engagement, and operational capabilities within Thai companies.
The Path Forward: Innovation and Deeper Integration
While the overall increase in digital maturity is a positive indicator for Thailand’s economy, the findings underscore the need for continued focus on innovation and R&D. The slight dip in digital product and service development suggests a potential gap between adopting existing technologies and creating novel digital solutions. Furthermore, the early stages of AI deployment indicate that businesses need to move beyond experimentation and pilot phases to achieve the full transformative benefits of these advanced tools.
Efforts to foster greater innovation, support R&D initiatives, and encourage deeper integration of technologies like AI will be crucial for Thai firms to solidify their digital maturity and maintain a competitive edge in the global digital landscape. Continued investment in workforce capabilities and robust cybersecurity measures will also remain essential pillars of this ongoing digital transformation.
