Central Bank Projects Moderate Economic Outlook
The nation’s economic growth is projected to reach 2% this year, with inflation expected to hover around 3%, according to insights from the central bank chief. These figures paint a picture of a moderately expanding economy facing persistent, yet manageable, inflationary pressures.
Inflationary Trends and Future Projections
Headline inflation is anticipated to hit the 3% mark within the current year before showing signs of easing in the subsequent year. Looking further ahead to 2027, the central bank forecasts a growth rate of 1.7% coupled with a lower inflation rate of 1.4%. This projection suggests a gradual stabilization of price levels over the medium term.
Recent data indicates a notable uptick in inflation, with the annual rate climbing to 2.89% in April. This surge, the highest in over three years, has been largely attributed to escalating energy costs. The central bank noted this trend as a key factor influencing its economic outlook.
Export Performance and Trade Balance
Positive developments are anticipated in the export sector, with expectations for growth between 12% and 13% this year. This robust export performance is poised to contribute to a potential return to a trade surplus by the fourth quarter, a significant indicator of economic health.
Monetary Policy Stance
In light of the current economic conditions, key interest rates are expected to remain unchanged unless significant shifts in the economic landscape necessitate a policy adjustment. The central bank previously maintained its policy rate at 1.00% during its April review. The next policy meeting is scheduled for June 24.
Government Support Measures
To mitigate the impact of rising living costs, the government has initiated a substantial consumer subsidy program. This initiative, valued at 176 billion baht (approximately US$5.4 billion), aims to provide relief by subsidizing 60% of the prices for select goods, directly addressing the cost of living concerns for citizens.
Revised Growth Forecasts
These latest projections represent a slight adjustment from earlier forecasts. Previously, there was an expectation for growth to reach 2.1% this year. For 2027, an earlier projection had placed growth at 1.6%.
