A tragic incident unfolded in Chachoengsao province, Thailand, on the night of Saturday, June 27, resulting in the deaths of three Myanmar nationals. A local community security volunteer, identified as 24-year-old Teeraphat, claims he fired his weapon in self-defense after an alleged public disturbance escalated into violence. Police were dispatched to a residential area in the Koh Khanun subdistrict of Phanom Sarakham district around 11:30 PM following reports of the incident.
Incident Details and Initial Findings
Upon arrival, law enforcement officers discovered the bodies of three Myanmar nationals, whose identities have not yet been publicly released. Investigations revealed that each victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds, estimated to be between three and four per person. The scene was littered with more than 16 spent 9mm bullet casings, indicating a significant exchange of gunfire.
A Thai man, named Phichai, was also seriously injured during the altercation. According to initial police reports, Phichai was attacked with a glass bottle, sustaining a head injury, and was subsequently stabbed multiple times. He was transported to Phanom Sarakham Hospital for urgent medical attention before police could formally interview him at the scene.
Accused’s Account of Events
Teeraphat, the man who identified himself as a member of a local community security volunteer team, remained at the location and cooperated with authorities, surrendering to the police. He provided a detailed statement to investigators, asserting that his actions were a matter of self-defense.
According to Teeraphat’s account, a large group, estimated to be over 20 Myanmar nationals, had gathered in the vicinity for what he described as a party. He stated that the group was using a vehicle’s headlights to illuminate the area, causing considerable noise and disturbance.
Teeraphat and Phichai reportedly approached the gathering to request that the noise be reduced and the vehicle’s lights be turned off. He claimed that the group initially complied with this request, extinguishing the car’s headlights.
Escalation and Fatal Confrontation
However, Teeraphat alleged that the situation rapidly deteriorated shortly thereafter. He stated that several individuals from the group then confronted Phichai, striking him on the head with a glass bottle. As the confrontation intensified, Teeraphat claims he fired a single warning shot into the air in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.
Despite the warning shot, Teeraphat asserted that the group continued their aggressive actions. He reported that more than 10 individuals then advanced towards him. During this escalated confrontation, he stated that Phichai was stabbed repeatedly until he collapsed. Faced with what he perceived as an imminent threat, Teeraphat stated he then fired multiple shots at the advancing individuals.
