Prominent Physician Succumbs to Injuries After Island Accident
An esteemed physician, Associate Professor Dr. Theerasak Kaewamatawong, 53, has died following severe brain trauma sustained in a motorcycle accident on the night of May 23. The incident occurred in Surat Thani province.
Dr. Theerasak initially received treatment at Koh Phangan Hospital. He was subsequently transferred to Bangkok Hospital in Samui and later to Ramathibodi Hospital in Bangkok to receive specialized medical care.
Reports indicate the motorcyclist involved in the collision was Duncan Wilcock, a 51-year-old British national. Authorities have stated that Wilcock was allegedly riding without a valid license and tested positive for cocaine following the incident.
Widespread Grief and Tributes
The hospital confirmed Dr. Theerasak’s passing on Sunday, prompting an outpouring of sorrow from his colleagues, students, and the broader medical community. He was widely recognized for his expertise as a physician and his dedication to medical education.
Dr. Theerasak served as a pulmonologist at Ramathibodi Hospital and held a lecturer position at the Faculty of Medicine, Mahidol University. His professional practice also extended to Vimut Phaholyothin Hospital in Bangkok and Bangkok Hospital Samui, in addition to his volunteer work at Koh Phangan Hospital.
A statement from Vimut Phaholyothin Hospital expressed deep condolences, noting, “Throughout his career, he served with dedication and commitment. His contributions to medicine and to the care of his patients will be remembered by all of us.”
Investigation Continues
The specific circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation. Koh Phangan police are reportedly considering filing additional charges against the British suspect.
