Devastation in Northern Venezuela After Powerful Quakes
Northern Venezuela is grappling with widespread devastation following a series of powerful earthquakes on Wednesday evening. Two tremors, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck in quick succession, leaving communities in ruins and prompting a desperate search for missing individuals.
La Guaira Reels from Tremors
The coastal city of La Guaira, a popular destination for residents of the capital Caracas seeking seaside enjoyment, has been among the hardest-hit regions. Once known for its tall buildings and swimming pools, the town of approximately 25,000 residents now bears the scars of the seismic activity. Many of its structures have been severely damaged or reduced to rubble.
As of Thursday night, the confirmed death toll had climbed to 235, with an estimated 4,300 people sustaining injuries. The scale of destruction is palpable, with ruined buildings and dazed survivors a common sight. Clouds of dust still hang in the air, a stark reminder of the collapses that transformed luxury seaside condominiums into tangled masses of metal, glass, and concrete.
Frantic Rescue Efforts Amidst Aftershocks
In the absence of immediate government assistance, many residents have taken it upon themselves to search for their loved ones trapped beneath the debris. One woman, identified as del Giudice, expressed her mounting frustration and grief as she surveyed the rubble where she believed her son was buried. “It is a lot of rock, and with bare hands it is impossible,” she stated, her voice heavy with despair.
Her grandson, 23-year-old Alessandro, donned a volunteer firefighter’s helmet and joined the grim search for his missing father. Sobbing, he looked at the remnants of a building, resolute in his belief, “He is in there.”
Rescue teams and volunteers are tirelessly scaling heaps of ruins that were once multi-story buildings, their calls for the missing echoing through the devastated landscape. The earth continues to tremble with aftershocks, adding to the anxiety of a nation enduring this catastrophe. The coastal highway has been fractured in multiple locations, and numerous buildings along the coast are either uninhabitable or completely gone. Even two five-star hotels have collapsed.
Looting Reported as Disaster Area Declared
Interim President Delcy Rodriguez visited the affected region on Thursday and officially declared it a disaster area. Amidst the widespread destruction, reports have emerged of looting within the community.
Amidst the chaos and despair, signs of resilience are also visible. On the wall of one house, seemingly tossed aside like a toy by the tremors, a message offered a glimmer of hope: “Perez family, alive.”
