Authorities have apprehended a former deputy district chief in connection with a sophisticated firearms permit forgery scheme. The arrest is a significant development in an ongoing operation targeting a transnational gun trafficking network operating in Chiang Rai and surrounding provinces.
Operation Uncovers Widespread Forgery
The investigation, spearheaded by the Department of Provincial Administration (DoPA), revealed that forged gun purchase permits were being issued by leveraging the identities and personal documentation of unsuspecting local officials and community leaders. This illicit activity allowed firearms to enter the country and circulate through illegal channels.
During the coordinated operation, law enforcement officers detained five additional individuals. These arrests include other government officials and owners of gun shops, suggesting a broader conspiracy involving multiple parties.
Evidence Seized
A search of the former deputy district chief’s vehicle yielded substantial evidence, including a .380-calibre handgun, 37 rounds of ammunition, and 130,000 baht in cash. Investigators noted that the suspect was reportedly out on bail on a separate corruption charge at the time of his arrest.
Investigation Triggered by Irregularities
The probe was initiated after DoPA officials identified significant discrepancies within the firearms licensing records for Chiang Khong district, spanning from 2022 to 2023. A review of these records showed that hundreds of purchase permits had been issued without corresponding possession licenses, raising immediate red flags.
Officials have stated their intention to pursue prosecution against all individuals implicated in this extensive forgery and trafficking operation.
