Thailand Ventures into Surf Therapy to Enhance Wellbeing
Phang Nga, Thailand – A pioneering initiative is exploring the profound connection between ocean waves and mental and emotional wellbeing. Under the theme “The Wave of Healing,” a recent “Thailand Surf Therapy Real Experience & Trust Building Journey” took place in Phang Nga, bringing together key figures from the tourism and wellness sectors to experience and shape a new wellness concept.
The project, a collaboration involving Legacy Thailand Health Excellence 2026, Waves for Change from South Africa, Prince of Songkla University Phuket Campus, La Vita Sana, Memories Surf House, and Span Global, aims to integrate the principles of surf therapy into Thailand’s renowned wellness tourism landscape. Participants, including members of the press, tourism operators, and wellness professionals, engaged in hands-on activities and discussions to assess the potential of “Thailand Surf Therapy.”
A Science-Based Wellness Approach
Thailand Surf Therapy is conceptualized as a science-based wellness approach, drawing inspiration from international surf therapy knowledge. It investigates how the combined elements of surfing, immersion in nature, physical activity, mindful breathing techniques, and positive social connections can contribute to improved emotional and mental health.
Nat Kruthasoot, deputy governor for tourism products and business at the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), highlighted the growing demand from travelers for experiences that foster self-reconnection, balance, and overall wellbeing. “Thailand Surf Therapy presents a significant opportunity to align the principles of science-based wellness with Thailand’s inherent strengths—our rich marine resources, our established wellness expertise, and the unique warmth of Thai hospitality,” Kruthasoot stated.
He further emphasized that the “Real Experience & Trust Building Journey” served as a vital platform for stakeholders to learn, share insights, and collaboratively guide the development of Thailand Surf Therapy. “This project underscores how surfing, physical movement, nature, and human connection can be woven into meaningful travel experiences, thereby promoting emotional and mental wellbeing. Simultaneously, it reinforces Thailand’s dedication to cultivating high-quality tourism products and experiences that deliver lasting value to travelers, local communities, and industry operators,” Kruthasoot added.
Global Expertise Meets Local Potential
Liaan Papier, a representative from the South African surf therapy organization Waves for Change, explained that the practice extends beyond mastering wave riding. “Surf Therapy is fundamentally about creating a secure environment that empowers individuals to build self-confidence, cultivate mental resilience, develop emotional regulation skills, and foster meaningful relationships through the therapeutic power of the ocean,” Papier shared.
“We are thrilled to share our expertise with Thailand and to collaboratively explore how this knowledge can be thoughtfully adapted to the Thai tourism and cultural context,” he added. Waves for Change has a decade-long history of developing surf therapy programs, including their “Take 5” curriculum, which merges wellbeing education with youth development.
Rise On Wave: Championing Thai Surf Therapy
The development of the Thai surf therapy model is being supported by Rise On Wave, an independent network comprising Prince of Songkla University Phuket Campus, La Vita Sana, Memories Surf House, and Span Global. This network posits that integrating surf lifestyle experiences with science-based wellness principles can forge a new pathway for Thailand’s coastal tourism, enhancing the value of its marine assets.
The initiative aims to elevate surfing beyond a recreational activity, positioning it as a tool for wellbeing enhancement, personal potential development, and the creation of immersive travel experiences that foster a deeper connection with nature. During the Phang Nga event, Rise On Wave adapted elements from the Waves for Change “Take 5” curriculum for application within Thailand’s tourism offerings. The program specifically targeted executives, business owners, and travelers seeking effective strategies for managing emotional stress.
Program Formats Under Exploration
The broader objective is to establish high-value, meaningful tourism products and services that address the physical and mental wellbeing needs of individuals experiencing stress and anxiety. The “Real Experience & Trust Building Journey,” held from June 18 to 19, 2026, provided a crucial space for learning, sharing, and feedback.
Attendees gained firsthand experience of the Thailand Surf Therapy concept and offered recommendations for future program enhancements. Currently, three distinct program formats are under consideration:
- Wave Reset Program (3-5 days): Designed to help participants connect with nature and build comfort with the process of falling from a surfboard.
- Ocean Balance Program (7-14 days): Focuses on exploring the dynamic and ever-changing nature of the sea.
- Surf & Soul Program (14+ days): Intended to guide participants in cultivating a safe inner space for themselves and those around them.
The feedback gathered from this journey will be instrumental in shaping the next phase of the Thailand Surf Therapy experience.
Looking Ahead: Thailand Health Excellence 2026
The next significant milestone for this project is scheduled for June 30, 2026, at the Thailand Health Excellence 2026 event. This platform will be used to present the key learnings from the Experience Journey and to introduce the Thailand Surf Therapy concept, its proposed formats, and development trajectory to a diverse audience, including members of the press, tourism operators, wellness partners, and international stakeholders. This presentation marks a further step in establishing Thailand Surf Therapy as a premier science-based wellness experience, deeply rooted in the country’s stunning marine environment.
