Thai Airways has marked a significant milestone in its 66-year history with the inaugural commercial flight of its first female pilot. Pannathon “Bam” Thanrungrueangchai took to the skies on Monday, June 1, operating flight TG564 from Bangkok to Hanoi.
A Historic Flight
The national carrier officially announced the achievement through its corporate communications channels, celebrating Thanrungrueangchai’s debut as a pilot with the airline. This event signifies a historic moment, as she becomes the first woman to captain a commercial flight for Thai Airways.
Background and Training
Thanrungrueangchai’s journey into aviation began at the International Academy of Aviation Industry at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. She further honed her skills by completing commercial pilot training at the Asia Aviation Academy. Prior to joining Thai Airways, she accumulated over four years of experience as a co-pilot on Airbus A320 aircraft, serving as a first officer.
Her inaugural flight was conducted aboard an Airbus A320-200. The occasion was attended by Chuntarika Jotikasthira, the airline’s chief human resources officer, and other executives from flight operations, who were present to extend their congratulations.
Commitment to Diversity and Inspiration
Thai Airways highlighted that this achievement underscores its dedication to fostering diversity, equality, and career development for all qualified personnel. The airline expressed its hope that Thanrungrueangchai’s success will serve as an inspiration, particularly for younger generations of women aspiring to careers in the aviation industry.
Public Reaction and Context
The announcement garnered widespread positive attention and congratulations on social media. However, some commentary acknowledged that female pilots have been active in the industry with other airlines for some time. Mentions were made of individuals like Chananporn “Nod” Rosjan, Miss Thailand Universe 2005, who is also a commercial pilot currently flying with Thai AirAsia X. Additionally, the Royal Thai Air Force announced its first female pilot, Nanticha Suphachai, in February of the previous year, who reportedly serves with the Aerial Photography Unit of the Royal Thai Survey Department.
