Tragic Discovery Ends Four-Day Search for Missing Trekker
A Thai woman who vanished during a trekking expedition in the mountainous region bordering Phatthalung and Trang provinces has been found deceased. The discovery was made near a waterfall today, June 4, concluding an intensive four-day search operation.
Details of the Disappearance
The 53-year-old woman, identified as Wanthanee, also known by her nickname Ae, was reported missing on June 1. She had been part of a group of 13 friends who traveled from Nonthaburi province for the trekking trip. The group had spent the night on Khao Jed Yod Mountain and was preparing for their descent on the morning of June 1.
According to her companions, Wanthanee awoke early and packed her belongings. She informed the group that she intended to begin descending the mountain alone. Despite requests from her friends to wait and travel together for safety, she opted to proceed independently.
Familiarity with the Terrain
Friends indicated that Wanthanee was familiar with the area, having visited the forest and traversed the route on previous occasions. This experience, they suggested, may have contributed to her confidence in venturing ahead of the group.
Under the planned itinerary organized by local guides, the group was scheduled to rest at Nan Sato Waterfall. Wanthanee was expected to rendezvous with them there, but she never arrived.
Search Efforts and Challenges
Immediate search efforts were launched by guides and fellow trekkers. The operation faced significant hurdles due to persistent rainfall, which obscured footprints and complicated route navigation. The search area was expanded over the subsequent days.
Earlier today, search teams located what appeared to be recent human waste and used tissues in the vicinity of Ton Teh Waterfall. These findings suggested Wanthanee might have been in the area recently, prompting rescuers to concentrate their efforts around the waterfall. Initial hopes were that she might be found alive.
Body Recovered
At approximately 5 p.m., search teams discovered Wanthanee’s body near the waterfall. Officials involved in the recovery operation theorize that she may have become disoriented in the forest and attempted to descend by following a watercourse. Given the slippery and hazardous terrain, it is suspected that Wanthanee may have slipped and fallen from a cliff near the waterfall.
Recovery teams were deployed to retrieve her body, with arrangements being made for its return to her family in Nonthaburi province. The recovery mission was reportedly challenging due to the heavy rain and muddy conditions prevalent along the path to the discovery site.
